Flies in lines or 'V's; soars in graceful circles, often to great heights. Glides low over water surface; alights heels down. Swims in flocks. Often attended by Little Black Cormorants, Silver Gulls, when flocks feeding. Scavenges from people fishing. Very large black and white bird. Long pink bill. Distensible throat pouch. Primaries, shoulders, rump, tail, upperwing except centre, black; otherwise white. Head, nape, side of neck can be greyish. Legs, webbed feet grey. Br. Bill, facial skin, becomes red when courting.
